About DiseaseWatch UK
Real-time canine and feline infectious disease surveillance across the United Kingdom. Built on rigorous data protection, veterinary ethics, and mathematical privacy protection.
Public Good Surveillance
Empowering pet guardians and veterinary clinics with early warning signals to curb fatal outbreaks like Parvovirus and Panleukopenia.
ICO Data Minimisation
Zero collection of pet owner names or exact street numbers. Every coordinate is mathematically fuzzed before storage.
Clinical Verification
Three-tier intelligence combining grassroots community observations, corroborated signals, and verified RCVS veterinary surgeon reports.
1. Our Surveillance Mission
Infectious animal diseases such as Canine Parvovirus, Leptospirosis, Canine Distemper, and Feline Panleukopenia can spread rapidly through local walking parks, daycares, and neighborhoods. Traditional national surveillance often experiences reporting lags of weeks or months.
DiseaseWatch UK was established to solve this latency gap. By providing a decentralized, real-time map interface, we allow veterinary practices and local animal guardians to report confirmed or suspected cases within minutes. When multiple cases cluster within a geographical radius, our automated risk engine highlights localized biosecurity threats, prompting heightened vaccination awareness and prompt clinical caution.
2. Data Protection by Design & Geo-Fuzzing Architecture
Trust is the foundation of disease surveillance. Pet owners must feel safe reporting without fearing neighbourhood stigmatisation, and veterinary professionals must strictly adhere to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Code of Professional Conduct (Chapter 14: Client Confidentiality).
In full alignment with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) Anonymisation Code of Practice and UK GDPR Article 25, DiseaseWatch UK operates on a strict Data Protection by Design and Default architecture:
How Our Geo-Fuzzing Algorithm Protects You:
Step 1: Outward Centroid
When an outward postcode is submitted, the system looks up the general geometric centre of the entire district covering dozens of streets.
Step 2: 300–600m Random Offset
The centroid is automatically displaced in a random direction (0°–360°) by a random distance between 300 and 600 metres.
Step 3: Instant Memory Purge
The raw submitted postcode is permanently discarded from temporary memory. Only the randomized coordinate is saved to disk.
Anti-Triangulation & Coordinate Persistence on Updates:
When a report is edited or revised, our database triggers strictly preserve the original randomized coordinates. Applying fresh random offsets on revision could enable multi-sample averaging attacks to triangulate the original point. Freezing the fuzzed coordinates guarantees permanent privacy across the full lifecycle of the record.
Result: It is mathematically impossible for anyone—including platform developers, government bodies, or third parties—to trace a public marker back to a specific house, flat, or veterinary practice.
3. ICO Statutory Framework & Data Ethics
DiseaseWatch UK operates in strict adherence to the guidance published by the UK Information Commissioner’s Office:
- Strict Data Minimisation (UK GDPR Art. 5(1)(c)): We do not collect animal names, client names, residential street numbers, or telephone numbers.
- No Commercial Tracking or Ad Pixels: We do not utilize third-party tracking cookies, behavioural profiling tools, or marketing ad networks.
- Transparent Lawful Processing (UK GDPR Art. 6): Every data item collected has an identified legal basis, comprehensively detailed in our Privacy Policy.
- Subject Access Rights: Full support for Subject Access Requests (SARs), data portability, and immediate account deletion.
4. Three-Tier Verification & Algorithmic Weighting
To prevent false alarms while maintaining agile early detection, our surveillance engine classifies cases into three distinct trust tiers:
Submitted by verified RCVS Veterinary Surgeons or Nurses whose credentials have been validated by administrators. These carry highest algorithmic weight and immediately elevate regional risk indicators.
Grassroots observations that have been corroborated by neighboring clinical reports, local veterinary records, or confirmed by our moderation team.
Initial submissions by pet owners or unverified accounts. Clearly designated as unconfirmed to provide fast grassroots situational awareness without triggering unverified panic.
5. Early Preview Phase & Partnerships
DiseaseWatch UK is currently in an active Closed Preview / Beta testing phase. Map datasets currently visible include simulated incident records designed to evaluate UI responsiveness and spatial clustering ahead of our open release (scheduled for early 2027).
